Thingvellir is also the place where the ancient Icelandic parliament was established in 930. Then we head for the famous Geysir hot spring area, where Strokkur erupts every few minutes. We also visit Gullfoss the largest two-stepped waterfall in Iceland. After visiting these world-famous sights, we continue through village Fludir to Thjorsardalur valley dominated by the famous Volcano Hekla. We stop at the waterfall Hjalparfoss and enjoy other sight of the valley before we arrive at our accommodation for next two nights in Landhotel situated in the beautiful countryside of South Iceland.
We head east, along the south shore through the dramatic landscapes of the south coast of Iceland where we encounter highlights such as the waterfalls Skogafoss and Seljalandsfoss on our way to the unique Jökulsarlon Glacier Lagoon. The lagoon developed around 60 years ago with continuous process of calving and falling of icebergs from the glacier tongue Breidamerkurjökull. These icebergs are seen in two shades, one type in milky white, while the other type is in bright blue colour, which is an interplay of light and ice crystals. Seals can oft be spotted at the mouth of the lagoon to catch fish in the lagoon, which is a sight to watch. On the way back to Landhotel, we have a good opportunity to admire the spectacular view of the south coast, with the black sand coast or the greenery of the farms along the road and the white glacier caps of Vatnajökull and the famous volcano Eyjafjallajökull that erupted in spring 2010.
Driving along the south west coast of Iceland we visit the old trading town Eyrarbakki known for its old timber houses along the main street before we head to the colorful thermal area of Krisuvik formed by fumaroles, mud pots and hot springs. The final highlight before getting back to Reykjavik is the spectacular Blue Lagoon. You have a choice of viewing the lagoon or enjoy soaking in the mineral rich water with its fine silica mud (bathing admission not included). We arrive in the afternoon in Reykjavik, where we will stay at Hotel Exeter by the harbor in the heart of the city center.
