No matter how much reading or preparation you’ve done for your dream destination, there’s nothing that really substitutes a well-organized guided tour. But we know travelling in large groups of people is not everybody´s cup of tea. For those who prefer more time with their guide, a little more flexibility in the schedule and to enjoy the experience in their own company, our private tours are the perfect fit.
On a clear day in Reykjavik, in the far distance across the bay from the city‘s harbour, lies a glorious peninsula of jagged mountains and one mighty picturesque glacier. This is Snæfellsnes peninsula, the most magical of all peninsulas (or so say we). It has inspired fiction and fantasy for centuries, from elven folk lore to 20th century hippie alien conventions. This is a destination like no other, a place so beautiful it seems to belong to another dimension.
The National Park of Snæfellsnes is an incredibly diverse area and in many ways, it showcases some of Iceland’s most unique and charismatic features. It’s full of ancient, mossy lava fields, charming and colourful fishing villages, glorious mountains, black sandy beaches and spectacular views in all directions. Many of the sights in Snæfellsnes have become their own Instagram stars, such as Kirkjufell mountain, Djúpalónssandur’s black sand, not to mention, the area’s ruling king, Snæfellsjökull glacier.
In the middle of this beautiful peninsula sits Snæfellsjökull, the stunning glacier that seems to wield its own atmosphere. Its sheer presence and magical aura features heavily in Jules Verne’s Journey to the Center of the Earth and Nobel Laureate Halldór Laxness’ Under the Glacier. The tour offers numerous views of this beautiful landmark. It is after all the real star of the show.
This 12-hour tour offers numerous stops through this diverse and rich area with a professional guide to lead the way. A private tour means more time with your guide and more flexibility for your time, interests and stops. If you only have one day outside the city, this packed day tour is an excellent choice.
Borgarnes is a town located on a peninsula at the shore of Borgarfjörður in Iceland and is the largest town in the Borgarbyggð municipality with a population of about 3750 residents. Here we make our first small stop and will be able to buy small snacks which we recommend for the long trip
A small golden sand beach known for it's wildlife and common sightings of Harbour and Gray Seals
A Fishing village known for its early founding and being since 1565 a trading post of the Danish Crown and a seat of Viceroyalty in the region until the 19th century. Birdlife and unique rock formations can be found all across the shores of the village. A Statue of Bárður Snæfellsáss - a legendary half human, half ogre from the Icelandic Sagas is prominently displayed.
A black sand beach near the foot of Snæfellsjökull Glacier. Rusted remains of the British trawler Epine (Grimsby) litter the coast after having wrecked on the cliffs nearby on March 13 1948. Four lifting stones can also be found here that were used as a test of strength among the locals. The Fullsterkur stone weighs 154kg, Hálfsterkur weighs in at 100kg, Hálfdrættingur at 54 kg, Amlóði at 23kg. To be considered to be fit to work on the boats that once populated the beach, a successful lift of Hálfdrættingur was the minimum weight required to atleast hip-height.
A crater formation variously described as a home of mythical hidden-people legends and/or elves.
A small town on the northern side of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. Here we have a short break and are able to use the facilities.
A lonesome cathedral like mountain overlooking the town of Grundarfjörður
