Reykjanes UNESCO Global Geopark - Private Tour One-day tour

Our partner: Reykjavik Excursions

Description

A destination like no other in a private tour

No matter how much reading or preparation you’ve done for your dream destination, there’s nothing that really substitutes a well-organized guided tour. But we know travelling in large groups of people is not everybody´s cup of tea. For those who prefer more time with their guide, a little more flexibility in the schedule and to enjoy the experience in their own company, our private tours are the perfect fit.

The Hottest Peninsula in Reykjavík

For most of the 20th century, the Reykjanes peninsula was characterized by a rather unattractive US navy air base which is sort of the reason for why Keflavik International Airport is where it is. Many Icelanders associated the area with heavy industry, power plants and military bases. But this peninsula is actually a UNESCO Geopark, a thriving geothermal area, where you can see the tectonic plates pull apart at the Mid Atlantic Ridge and bubbling hot springs and as a result, it is in fact, both fascinating and glorious.

Power to the People

This tour visits the ON Geothermal Energy Exhibition (admission is included) about 30 minutes from Reykjavik. The exhibition explains the utilisation of geothermal energy in Iceland in a fun and informative way.

Following the exhibition, the tour stops at Strandarkirkja, a small church on the south coast. It’s a unique place with an even more unique story and some fascinating photo ops.

A little further along the south coast of the peninsula, the tour stops at the beautiful geothermal area of Krýsuvík which sports solfataras, fumaroles, mud pots and hot springs.

Gunnuhver is a favourite destination for many, as it is the largest mud geyser in Iceland, about 20 metres wide.

Geological, Historical and Visual Dramatics

Grindavík is a small fishing village of about 3,000 inhabitants. The village has a long history, including a pirate invasion from Morocco and Algeria in the 17th century and the subsequent abduction and enslavement of fifteen residents. The reefs near the town can be very difficult to navigate, and many ships have crashed outside this village. The tour stops for views of one shipwreck on this tour, a testimony to the ruthlessness of the ocean.

Finally, the magnificent coastline and dramatic breaking waves by the Reykjanesviti lighthouse are a feast for the senses and crossing the “Bridge Between the Continents” which connects the American and Eurasian tectonic plates is a unique geological experience.

Between the lava fields and geothermal hot spots, this tour offers close encounters with the life and power of this beautiful peninsula. Those who have a pre-booked ticket to the Blue Lagoon after the tour will be dropped off there. We recommend booking the 17:00 admission.
