No matter how much reading or preparation you’ve done for your dream destination, there’s nothing that really substitutes a well-organized guided tour. But we know travelling in large groups of people is not everybody´s cup of tea. For those who prefer more time with their guide, a little more flexibility in the schedule and to enjoy the experience in their own company, our private tours are the perfect fit.
This tour offers highlights of the history and culture of Reykjavík, Iceland’s beautiful and charming capital.
The 3-hour tour stops at the most important places in Reykjavík, including the famous Hallgrímskirkja church, named after the 17th-century poet and clergyman Hallgrímur Pétursson. It is the highest church in Iceland at 74,5 metres high (244 ft.) and it took 41 years to build. Construction began in 1945 and didn’t end until 1986. It additionally houses the largest church organ in Iceland, with 5,275 pipes, 15 metres high and weighing 25 tons.
Other stops include Höfði, where the US President Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev President of the Soviet Union met to end the Cold War, and Bessastaðir, the official residence of the Icelandic president, located on the beautiful Álftanes peninsula. Bessastaðir was first settled in the year 1,000 and has since then been an important place in Iceland. Snorri Sturluson, the author of Snorra-Edda, lived there in the 13th century and it later became a Royal Fortress and the residence of the Norse King’s highest ranking officers and officials living in Iceland.
The tour ends at the beautiful Harpa concert hall and conference centre in downtown Reykjavík, which was designed by the Danish firm Henning Larsen Architects in co-operation with Danish-Icelandic artist Ólafur Elíasson.
The guide provides all essential information regarding Reykjavík‘s rich culture, history and natural environment. This is the essential introduction to Iceland‘s capital!
The private tour has a more flexible schedule so your group can decide how much time is spent at each location. It also means that there’s often time for a bonus destination en route. Depending on the time, day and conditions, the guide might suggest an extra stop, maybe something specifically of interest to your group. It’s really up to you and what most interests you, but don’t worry, none of our locations disappoint.
